In the face of a cold air mass, the National Fire Agency (NFA) reminded: Be mindful for ventilation for water heaters to prevent toxic air and provide peace of mind.

The strongest continental cold air mass since the beginning of winter is here! The temperature is low in various places. As reminded by the National Fire Agency (NFA), when using a gas water heater, open ventilation must be maintained to avoid carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning!

According to statistics from the National Fire Agency (NFA), a total of 22 cases of carbon monoxide poisoning have occurred this year (as of 2024/11/27), resulting in one death and 59 people treated in the hospital. Nearly 90% (19 cases) of the 22 cases were caused by outdoor water heaters installed in areas of poor ventilation. As per Director General HSIAO Huan-Chang of the National Fire Agency (NFA), the populaces often close their doors and windows because of the cold weather. Where a gas water heater is installed improperly without adequate ventilation, the exhaust gas generated by the combustion of the gas cannot be smoothly drawn out, which may lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

As appealed by the National Fire Agency (NFA, the populaces must choose the correct type of gas water heater based on ventilation conditions. Outdoor water heaters should be installed in areas with adequate ventilated outside the house. As for environments such as indoor space or balcony with covered windows, water heaters with forced exhaust functions should be adopted. In case of incorrect installation of the water heater, be sure to ask a qualified technician from the installation industry to help make improvements as soon as possible. Where symptoms such as dizziness, vomiting, or weakness in limbs after using the water heater, be alert to the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning. Please open the windows immediately for ventilation and call 119 for help.
