Preparation of emergency evacuation kit

Emergency evacuation kit
Apart from ordinary supplies, it is also a must to prepare emergency evacuation kit. When a building is severely damaged after the occurrence of earthquake, an immediate evacuation from the building will be needed. This is when the emergency evacuation kit will be used. People can immediately take the kit and head to the evacuation site to get away from the disaster zone.

Therefore, emergency evacuation kit is essential and must be ready for use at any time. In principle, take a light and easy-access backpack and put items that may be required for staying at the evacuation site in the early evacuation. For example, emergency food and drinking water; warm clothing; and medical and cleaning supplies. If there is any baby or children in the family, it is also a must to place diapers, milk powder, baby bottle and wet tissues therein. When preparing the kit, all family members can also gather and discuss what to put inside the kit according to their respective needs. Normally, each person shall have one emergency evacuation kit and, upon preparation thereof, mark the preparation date on the backpack to remind you checking the emergency evacuation kit once every half year. This can ensure that the items are not damaged, missing or expired, and help you to make replacement on time.

You can also log in “Bear EMIC”, a customized disaster prevention system established by National Fire Agency, Ministry of the Interior (https://bear.emic.gov.tw); and go to “Disaster Prevention Preparations > Preparing an Emergency Evacuation Kit” to check your kit with the emergency evacuation kit list. The system will also remind you to check your kit again a half year later.

It is suggested to place the emergency evacuation kit in a place with easy access, such as at or nearby your entrance. The following items are only for your reference:

Emergency food and drinking water
You can prepare some drinking water, cookies, chocolates, disaster prevention food, vacuum instant food and some other simple food. Families with a baby should prepare milk powder, vacuum packaged or canned non-staple food and so on.

Medical and cleaning supplies
Medical supplies such as povidone-iodine, cotton swabs and gauze; thermometer; masks; hand sanitizer; tissues; wet tissues; sanitary napkins; medicines (daily medication and commonly used medicine; it is important to pay attention to the expiry and preservation methods thereof) and so on.

Warm clothing
Lightweight jacket, underwear, socks, towels (rubber gloves), raincoat, small blanket, hand warmer and so on. If you have any small sleeping bags that can be easily carried around, it can also be placed in the kid. Families with a baby should put diapers in the kit; and place baby carrier nearby the entrance for easy access.

Valuable objects
Personal ID card; National Insurance Health card; a photocopy of deposit book(s) and other important legal certificates; and some cash. It is suggested to prepare some coins for public phone or vending machine.

Shoes
When leaving your residence for evacuation, it is important to wear shoes to prevent your feet from being cut by gravels and glass.

Others
Some other items, such as whistle, disaster prevention map (can be downloaded from the websites of National Fire Agency, Ministry of the Interior; and municipal / county / city government), portable radio, flashlight, batteries, lighter, swiss knife, power bank, power charging devices and so on.
