Sharing the fire safety standards database to improve the impartialness of fire inspections, the National Fire Agency (NFA) entered into a cooperation and licensing agreement with ULSE and accreditation institutes.
To strengthen fire safety standards and assist domestic suppliers in entering the international market, today (2024/12/03), Director General HSIAO Huan-Chang of the National Fire Agency (NFA), Vice President Ms. Sonya BIRD of UL (Underwriters Laboratories Inc.) Standards & Engagement (ULSE) Asia, Chairman CHEN Wen-Long of the Taiwan Fire Protection Safety Center Res Foundation, Chairman of the Association, and Chairman HSIAO Jia-Cheng of the Taiwan Fire Technology Foundation, entered into a cooperation and licensing agreement and co-held a seminar to enhance the quality and impartialness in the inspection and verification of fire service products in Taiwan.
As pointed out by Director General HSIAO Huan-Chang, UL is composed of three organizations, where 1) UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE) is responsible for the stipulation of all UL standards and their integration with international standards; 2) UL Research Institutes cooperates with scientists and professionals in various fields to develop relevant scientific research – the two organizations are non-profit organizations (NPO) – in addition, 3) UL Solutions is an internationally renowned independent product safety verification organization. The three organizations complement each other and work together to promote a safer world. UL is also a third-party verification institute recognized by Taiwan’s Fire Services Act and the Fire Technology Review Committee (FTRC) of the Ministry of Interior (MOI).
As per Director General HSIAO, to meet the needs of international trades and strengthen international exchanges and cooperation, the National Fire Agency (NFA) has entered into a cooperation and licensing agreement to share the testing standard database and testing experience with the signing counterparties. In the future, with reference to the testing standards for related fire equipment and devices in a timely manner, adjustments are to be made in our testing standards to assist domestic manufacturers in successfully entering the international market and improve the quality and visibility of Taiwan’s fire services products.
In addition to domestic fire safety inspection institutes, invited to this event also included representatives from groups of fire engineering, equipment, business, etc. and manufacturers, as well as National Association of Fire Protection Engineer R.O.C. (NAFPE). All participants showed full support to our government’s entering into the cooperation and licensing agreement with ULSE to assist the industry in improving its products, as well as demonstrated their attitudes of willing to actively participate in the matter. Safety specifications were expected to be discussed together, hoping to facilitate the simplification of foreign certification procedures, while promoting MIT products to the world.
Lastly, as per Director General HSIAO, today (2024/12/03), Kolin Low, Director of the Standards Department of ULSE Asia, and relevant professionals were also invited to jointly propose experiences and solutions on related issues. All were encouraged to engage in extensive discussion through this seminar, to understand each other's product quality management mechanisms, and work towards the direction of seeking the common ground among the differences. We look forward to smooth cooperation with ULSE and accreditation institutes in the future to improve the quality of fire service products, accelerate Taiwan's fire protection industry to integrate with the world, and further protect the safety of the populaces’ lives and properties.
